iPhone 3G Battery Tips
Just read in Yahoo Tech News some tips in making the iPhone less of a battery power hog. I decided to try it out on a test unit I luckily had with me today. My Conditions is that I turn back everything to default before trying the next tip and never actually using it after full charge.
Turn off push e-mail
(Tip Rank: 10 out of 10)
Push e-mail is one of the new features of the latest iPhone firmware and one of the worst battery consuming application as well. Turning it off really does save you power on the iPhone, not to mention it’s becoming one of the best Tips on iPhone 3G Care. Switch from push to “fetch” e-mail on your settings and choose 30minutes fetching. Try it your self and thank Yahoo for your new lease on battery life…
Dim the screen (Tip Rank: 6 out of 10)
Yeah, without testing I can surely attest to this, because all device which has a self-powered screen ot any screen with illumination or back light consumes power, so it will save you power if you dim them, you can even do this on your notebook computers and it will save you some juice too. Look under Settings then Brightness and set it to approximately half and turn on “Auto-Brightness” this feature allows the iPhone to automatically dim the screen in low-light situations
Turn off location services (Tip Rank: 5 out of 10)
Another Power Hog application is GPS and this another new feature of the iPhone. Go to Settings then General and Turn location services off, it will save you some juice, I tried alternating with the tips, and there are actually improvements on battery life. Applications dependent on this feature like Google Maps and other GPS applications will automatically prompt you to turn it back on. When you do, just turn it off again when you’re done with the app.
Switch on “Airplane Mode” in low- or no-signal areas (Tip Rank: 3 out of 10)
This applies to signal power and judging by my current condition, it really isn’t too much of a factor to Switch modes when almost all areas are covered with 3G signal, and the power savings aren’t that significant unless you’re using the iPhone to call or it’s GPS GSM Triangulations on low signal areas.
Install new iPhone apps over iTunes (Tip Rank: 5 out of 10)
Pretty self-explanatory here, installing applications over the air uses Power as compared to plugging the iPhone in and syncing it. Other than that, it’s a pretty descent power save depending on how often you download over the air.
Get an external battery pack (Tip Rank: 10 out of 10 )
Although I didn’t buy the recommended products on Yahoo’s suggestions, I think this pretty much is a Tip that is not a tip. More of a Common sense type of tip. If you use your phone often, then it is REALLY advisable to get and external battery pack.
Kill runaway background processes (Tip Rank: 8 out of 10 )
Now, this Tip is very important, ever heard of news of the iPhone Melting on someones pocket and burning. There might be some truth to this since one can notice that the iPhone 3G sometimes becomes hot at standby mode? This might be caused by a stuck application or buggy software, always check your background processes and turn off the application that shouldn’t be running. Running applications can drain your battery power and may cause your iPhone to heat up. The safest bet is to reset the phone once in a while, turning it on and off and if your iPhone hangs, just press and hold the sleep and home keys together.
